What to do when your car stops on I-40 in Amarillo
Roadside safety · 6 min read
A calm, location-first sequence for a highway breakdown—without asking you to take unsafe risks.
A vehicle problem on I-40 can feel urgent because traffic, frontage roads, exits, and wind conditions can make a location hard to explain. The goal is not to diagnose the vehicle on the shoulder. It is to reduce immediate risk and give a provider accurate information once a safe request can be made.
Start with the safest available position
If the vehicle is still moving, look for a safer place to stop that does not require an abrupt maneuver. A shoulder, exit area, parking lot, or other location that provides more separation from traffic can be preferable when it is reachable without creating further risk.
Once stopped, use hazard lights and assess your surroundings. If there is injury, smoke, fire, a blocked lane, or another immediate hazard, emergency services should take priority over a towing request. Do not remain in a position that exposes you to passing traffic simply to gather more vehicle information.
Describe the location like a driver, not a dispatcher
You do not need perfect coordinates to provide a helpful location. Start with I-40 eastbound or westbound, then add the nearest exit, cross street, frontage-road status, landmark, or business sign that you can identify safely. Direction is often as important as the roadway name.
Amarillo’s broader network includes major interchanges, surface streets, and frontage roads. Stating whether the vehicle is on the highway, a shoulder, a ramp, or a frontage road can prevent the common problem of a provider searching the wrong side of the corridor.
Give the provider only the details that affect the job
Share the vehicle year, make, model, whether it rolls and steers, any trailer, and what changed. A statement such as “the car will not start but is safely parked on the shoulder” is more actionable than a speculative diagnosis.
Before authorizing a tow, confirm the destination and ask whether the provider needs anything else to assess the equipment or access. Save the quoted scope, provider name, and destination in your phone notes. Those few details can make a difficult situation more manageable.
Start a towing request
This submits a request to Amarillo Tow. It is not emergency dispatch and does not confirm a truck, an ETA, a quote, or a provider response. In traffic, injured, or otherwise unsafe? Contact emergency services first.
